How to Finally Achieve Your Health Goals

What was your New Years resolution this year? I’m sure it comes as no surprise that losing weight still one of the top resolutions people make.

Truth be told, these resolutions don’t ever seem to stick. People try for a few weeks, or maybe even a few months, but then life gets in the way.

We hear it all the time, so many people would like to live a little healthier but it just doesn’t seem feasible in their life.

I challenge you this, WHY? or perhaps WHY NOT?, is the better question..

I feel as though a lot of people believe eating well, exercising regularly, and just living a healthy lifestyle in general is an ever-unreachable treasure on the horizon, we look to it, only to watch it fade further into the distance. They have seen others accomplish it, but no, they’ll never be able to do the same.

Part of the problem is that we come from a time of instant gratification. I want a nice meal, pop it in the microwave, I want to lose weight, take a pill, have surgery, or drink some weird juice for 2 weeks. The technological advances in today’s world mean we don’t have to work as hard, a lot has become instantaneous and the sweat and grit that it takes to accomplish something is fading.

It seems people have forgotten how to work and fail, and work some more, until they eventually succeed. It’s not about getting it perfect the first try. It’s about setting small goals, manageable goals that add up to you big goal.

1) Break your goals up into manageable pieces.

Let’s say you want to lose 50 lbs and well, that seems like a big number right?

Not if you break it down. Instead of looking at the big number, 50 lbs, make your goal to lose 6 lbs per month. Now that’s not so bad. 6 lbs?? I can do that! Then next month do it again, and the month after that. Now, 3 months later, you’ve lost almost 20 lbs! And I bet that your clothes are fitting looser, and your beginning to tone up and you can notice a difference in the mirror. Let’s assess your outlook on your journey to lose 50 lbs. I bet you’re a little more optimistic now and you’re only 3 months in. It all started with SMALL GOALS! I believe most people fail because they are intimidated by the “BIG number” or the BIG picture! Once you establish and acknowledge the end goal, TAKE YOUR FOCUS OFF OF IT for a little while and focus on the small ones. You can and should, check in with your big goal every once in a while, make sure it’s still there, let ‘em know you’ll be there soon! Don’t lose sight of your ultimate goal by any means, but don’t let the journey to your end goal scare you.

2) Take it slow.

Want to improve your diet? Don’t all of a sudden throw out your entire refrigerator and fill a brand new one with bean sprouts and celery sticks like it’s going to do you any good. That seriously doesn’t sound appealing :-/ and not to mention, you just threw out a perfectly good refrigerator…

If you eat a lot of candy during the day, maybe only eat 1 chocolate bar instead of 3. Replace those 2 with something else that you like. Pick your favorite fruit and eat that instead. If you eat a lot of take out, start by replacing 1 meal with something you bring from home, or something that you buy that is “whole” and by that I mean something unprocessed, not found in a vacuum sealed or airtight plastic bag. With that being said, don’t eat something you hate just because you think it’s the right thing to do, that will never work and you probably wont stick to it for very long.

So what was my approach? Well I sort of went about it by food group. I started by cutting out dairy. I actually did this in part to see if it would clear up my skin during my acne days, but that’s another story. Next, I significantly minimized refined starches and sugars, essentially anything that was not whole wheat/grain. From then on, I made little tweaks along the way, adding this, subtracting that.  I won’t blab on.. (too late :-)) but you get the idea; baby steps and every little bit counts!

3) It’s okay to fail, as long as you keep pushing.

I love the saying:

“No matter how slow you run, you’re lapping the guy on the couch.”

It is so true and motivational.

Remember: NO ONE SAID FAILING WAS AGAINST THE RULES!! Fail as many times as you need to until you SUCCEED, don’t be so hard on yourself, but still PUSH yourself. I always tell people who are trying to stick to a workout plan, you know when you are just being lazy and when you truly need a day off, pay attention to the difference. Talk to yourself, there are days when I really don’t feel like working out, but I just give myself a mini pep talk and get it done. One workout at a time.

3) Tailor your journey to…you!

My last piece of advice is to do what works for you! What works for someone else may not work for you. Find what you enjoy and stick to it, but the only way to learn this is through trial and error, don’t quit because you were dissatisfied with something, keep searching and striving until you are satisfied and have found what works!

Don’t Worry…Be Happy | It’s Good for Your Health

What is happiness? Better yet, what is happiness to you?

This question was probably very easy for some to answer and then rather difficult for others to answer.happy man

It’s no secret that life is hard. It’s full of negativity, conflict, struggle, sorrow, pain, death (I don’t think I need to go on..), but you can hardly be surprised when life in general begins to weigh on you. It seems only inevitable right?

I believe mental health is equally as important as physical health and so we should dedicate equally as much time to our mental health, as we do our physical health (or even physical appearance).

If you struggled to answer what happiness was to you, I urge you to invest some time in figuring out what makes you happy. Even for those who could answer with ease, reflection can be a powerful thing. It helps you to answers questions you didn’t even know you had.

Take a moment, grab a pen, some paper (or your phone, you cellphone addicts..) and write down 20 things that make you happy. I know what you’re thinking, TWENTY?!? That’s too much! I can’t think of 20 things that make me happy!

Well, look at it this way, I bet you could very quickly come up with 20 things that you hate, or that piss you off, or flat out stir some type of negative emotion in you. So, we have to teach ourselves to be more positive. Focus on the good, the great, the amazing. So, I am going to write out my list for you. Here goes nothing (wait, be more positive.) Here goes something!….(jeopardy music)…

  1. My Family
  2. My sisters and everything about them
  3. My two closest friends
  4. Spending time with my boyfriend
  5. Running
  6. Baking
  7. Listening to a song/music that touches my soul
  8. Warm summer nights
  9. Listening to crickets
  10. Holidays with my family
  11. Watching the ID channel and pretty much any crime  show
  12. Watching romantic comedies
  13. Painting my toes!
  14. Writing for Brown & Coconut of course!
  15. Shopping, or even just window-shopping. (something about being around so many new things!! 😀
  16. Drinking a hot cup of black coffee on a saturday morning
  17. Listening to rain/thunderstorms
  18. Spending quality time by myself
  19. Summer cookouts
  20. Sleeping (a lot)!!

Phew!! Okay, I did it! I can’t lie to you guys, I banged out the first 7 with ease, then I had to think for a second, but was able to get another 7 pretty quickly. Once I hit 14 I was STUCK! How bad is that??? Some deep thought got me 3 more, but the last 3 were quite a struggle!

You see why this needs to be done! Because we so easily forget what makes us happy. We focus on the negativity so much that the happiness gets pushed to the back of our minds, or even worse, out of our minds altogether! That negativity will gradually translate into physical problems, and what was once just in your mind, is now affecting your body.

So, I want you guys to make your lists. After you’re done, go check off each thing that you do regularly. How many checks out of 20 do you have? I have 10/20 — 50%, eh, that’s not so good. While some of these I can’t help, like if we go through a drought, well I clearly can’t listen to the rain, but what this means is that I need to find MORE things that make me happy that I can do regularly. I need to add more positivity to my life.

So, go make your lists! Don’t worry, I’ll wait…. *elevator music*

Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful!…

…but the humidifier’s so delightful!

If you’ve ever lived in a cold/dry climate you certainly know how harsh winter-like weather or dry climates can be on our bodies inside and out.

Whether it be a region that is always cold and dry, or a region that experiences winter seasonally, when that chill hits, you know what to expect.

 

Many people can experience the following:

  1. Dry skin
  2. Chapped Lips
  3. Increase in fine line & wrinkleswinter
  4. Breakouts
  5. Dry/scratchy throat
  6. Dry Hair
  7. Nosebleeds
  8. Greater risk of respiratory infections
  9. Greater risk of illness from viruses

Fortunately, there is a very simple solution to many of the above. No, not magic, but a humidifier. Plain and simple.

Using a humidifier in your home, bedroom, or office is a great way to keep your body in tip top shape when the air gets dry.

As someone who suffered from chronic nosebleeds during the winter, that would last for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, let me tell you, sleeping with a humidifier in my room has been a LIFESAVER.

Using a humidifier during the Winter or in cold and/or dry climates can help to:

  • Keep your skin & lips happy and hydrated so they stay radiant and supple,
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles — no need to spend money on expensive creams & serums!
  • Prevent weather induced breakouts because your skin doesn’t dry out and then overproduce oil to compensate (over production of oil contributes to breakouts.)
  • Keep your throat hydrated nixing that dry scratchy feeling caused by dry air
  • Hydrate your lovely locks.
  • Keep your nasal passage moist so nosebleeds will be dramatically reduced, if not sopped altogether
  • Help protect you from respiratory infections. Your lungs and nasal passage work best when they are lubricated. In a more humid environment, the tiny hairs in your lungs and nose can do a better job of fending off respiratory illnesses.
  • Offer some protection against certain viruses. For viruses that thrive in  cold dry air,  warmer/humid environments are not a place these nasty germs can survive thus, reducing your chance of infection.

Sooo, what are you waiting for??? Go out and treat yourself to a humidifier!! You’ll thank me! 🙂

Get Over It! (Your Cold, That Is..)

Colder weather usually means a dreaded COLD.  People tend to stay indoors for longer periods of time compared to warmer seasons. This creates a perfect opportunity for germs to be passed around the room! This means a you have a greater chance of catching the bug. Not only that, but some types of viruses actually travel easier in cooler temperatures which is also why people get certain types of colds during the winter. So aside from catching some extra Z’s, what’s a person to do when you find yourself under the weather??

Here are a few of my favorite ways of treating a cold:cold

1.Garlic Broth

As a child I couldn’t stand to stomach this broth, but it actually worked! My colds are typically reduced by 3-5 days by drinking this concoction 2x per day from the onset of your first sign of sickness.  What’s in this broth you may ask? There are 5 super simple ingredients!

  • Garlic (one whole head)
  • Onion (One medium)
  • Sea Salt (Sprinkle)
  • Turmeric (2 tsps)
  • Water (2 cups)

Place all ingredients in a small pot and boil until reduced to ¾ cup. Drink while still hot!

2.Smoothies

I love smoothies because they are such a quick and easy way to a major dose of much needed antioxidants. My favorite combination is to combine fresh kale, blueberries, raspberries, green apple, flaxseeds, & coconut water. This smoothie is full of vitamins and minerals that will definitely help your body become healthier and stronger. So if your thinking the only beverage to be drinking is orange juice while your sick, then think again. Ditch the oj, it is only overloading your body with excess sugar and calories.

3.Eucaplytus Showers

Have you ever felt so stuffy and congested that you feel like you can’t even function? Taking a hot, relaxing shower can definitely be a soothing refresher. The steam in combination with the eucalyptus helps to open up sinuses and relax the body which may become stiff from staying in bed all day.

TOP Health & Fitness Trends of 2013!

Fitness Trends

With the year coming to a close, I thought it’d be a good time to look at the top health & fitness trends of 2013! None of these trends originated this year, rather they have continued to grow in popularity and have remained in the spotlight this year, thus making their way to the top of Brown & Coconut’s list!

NOTE: I am not commenting on the effectiveness or safety of anything on this list, but merely highlighting its rise and continued popularity in 2013.

1)   Zumba

Zumba was created in the 1990’s by Beto Perez when he accidentally forgot his aerobics music for a class he was to teach, and proceeded to play the only thing he had, Latin & Salsa music. Officially licensed in 2001, this dance inspired fitness craze has only continued to increase in popularity since its start and has remained at the top of nearly everyone’s fitness “to-do” list throughout 2013.

2)   Herbalife

Started in the 1980’s in California, Herbalife is a nutrition company known worldwide. Offering products everywhere from meal replacement drinks, to protein powders, energy bars, and supplements, Herbalife is splashed all over social media, promoting healthier bodies through the use of their products.

3)  Body Wraps

Made by It Works, body wraps deliver a botanical-based formula using a non-woven cloth. The cloth is wrapped around a single body part to help tone and tighten an area (such as: abdomen, arms, and legs), as well as reduce the appearance of cellulite and varicose veins.

4)   Elimination Diets

Everywhere you turn, people seem to be cutting out one thing or another in an attempt to be healthier. Gluten, sugar, red meat, and dairy, to name a few, are just some of the foods people have chosen to nix.

5)   Cleanses

Total body system cleanses have most certainly grown in popularity and continue to do so. Cleanses come in the form of pills, powdered drink mixes, juices, and smoothies. Cleansers (people who cleanse 😉 ) most often do so to reduce bloat, kick-start a new diet/fitness regimen, regulate digestion, rev-up their energy, or just to be a little healthier all around. 6)   Quinoa

At the start of the year, the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations officially declared 2013, “the Year of the Quinoa” in an effort to battle hunger and promote healthy eating. So, of course this one had to be on our list! This grain-like crop is everywhere and it’s not surprising, considering it is a complete protein with more protein than any other grain, and is loaded with phytonutrients. Its health benefits are still being discovered, but has shown promising results as far as reducing inflammation.

7)    Going organic/natural

Not all, but many companies are moving away from harsh chemicals and trying to incorporate more natural and organic ingredients into their products. This trend stretches across industries including cleaning products, drinks, food, and cosmetics (just to name a few). Even companies that aren’t getting rid of chemicals and artificial ingredients entirely, are still incorporating natural elements through use of a few nature-made ingredients. Some companies are actually trying to head in a positive direction, while others are sadly using this as nothing more than a marketing campaign. 

8)   Strength-training for Women

Last, but certainly not least, I wanted to close with this, as it is by far my favorite trend. If you have some form of a social media account, whether it be Facebook, Instagram, or even Pinterest, then I’m sure you’ve seen lots of tight and toned women preaching the same message, MUSCLES are no longer just for MEN. Women are embracing, fit and toned bodies and ditching the thin, muscle-lacking physique. Women are breaking out of their shells and picking up weights ditching the idea that they’ll get “too bulky”.. GO LADIES GO!! 🙂

Stay FIT for the HOLIDAYS!

Uh oh… It’s that time of year again, the holiday season. This time of year is loaded with fun festivities, family, friends, and of course….FOOD.

holiday temptationTis the season of weight gain. First came the halloween candy kick-off, now we dive headfirst into the Holidays with dinner feasts and desserts lurking at each corner. Everywhere you turn there are holiday-inspired treats lurking. It’s no secret that this is a season full of food and drinks in which to indulge. 

So, how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle with all of these temptations around??

Brown & Coconut has a few tips so that losing holiday weight doesn’t have to be your 2014 New Years Resolution.

1) Keep your first line of defense up!

What is your first line of defense?? FOOD, WATER, & SLEEP!

Okay, okay, let me explain. 

You might not be able to control the constant flirting that sweet little pumpkin pie is doing with you from across the room (did it just wink at you??), but you CAN be sure to prepare your body for all the food flirtation by doing the following:

  • Get 8 or more hours of sleep per night

A lack of sleep can send our appetite into overdrive, making you more likely to saunter over to that pie and do  something you know you shouldn’t. Choosing to not let a good night’s rest take a back seat to the holiday chaos will definitely help you ward off those extra pounds.

  • Stay hydrated.

Drinking adequate amounts of water per day (2-3 liters on average) will keep your sometimes ravenous appetite quiet. Not to mention, you’re less likely to overeat if your stomach is nice and happy from a deliciously nutritious & balanced meal.

  • Continue your regular & balanced meals.

Eat regular meals (no skipping!!) and be sure to include lots of lean protein, veggies and fruits, but keep a close eye on your carbs and stick to a serving the size of your fist. This will keep your appetite in check.

 

2) Pump those breaks!healthy holidays

Try eating a LOT slower at your holiday meals (or any meal for that matter). This will give your body & brain a chance to communicate and let you know that you are full. That way, you are more likely to stop eating when you are full rather than overdo it.

 

3) Protein Party

Protein can be your secret weapon. If you know you’re headed to a party, try to have a little healthy protein beforehand (like nuts, seeds, peanut butter, etc). This way you’ll get fuller faster and won’t even want to think about going for any extra dessert.  

 

4) A little water with that wine?

For many of us, the holidays involve an alcoholic beverage or two, the key however, is to not allow the dehydrating effects of alcohol to send your appetite into overdrive. You can certainly enjoy your favorite drink, but for every alcoholic beverage you consume, drink double the water. Your body will thank you (just be cautious of those extra calories hiding in sugary cocktails).

 

5) Just say no.

No skipping workouts. Period. There’s always time for physical activity. Hit the gym if that’s what you enjoy, pop in your favorite workout DVD at home, hit the slopes for heart-pumping winter sports, or head out for a brisk walk/jog with your dog.

Don’t stop there though. If your job is sedentary, here are some other ways to incorporate more physical movement into your day:

  • Get off the bus or train 1 stop early and walk the rest of the way to work.
  • Park a little further away from your job and walk.
  • Go for a brisk walk mid-day if you can or on your lunch break.
  • Get up and stretch every so often.
  • Drink water constantly at work so you have no choice but to continually get up and walk to the bathroom.

Herbs just don’t get all the wonderful credit they deserve, huh?. Take Rosemary, for example. Rosemary is a fragrant and flavorful  herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. Although it is typically used in cooking, it has so many other benefits! So many that you just may find yourself using Rosemary more often then you think…

5.Detoxification

Rosemary contains antioxidants! This herb attacks those free radicals that promote disease and aging. Consuming rosemary may be the key to getting a cleaner and healthier body on the inside.

A Healthier Halloween

If it were up to me, I would BAN Halloween FOREVER!!!

Just kidding!! But, in all seriousness, I would swap the junk & chemical-filled candy out for natural and organic treats! Think about it, we are the adults here, not the little humans walking around all dressed up with halloween buckets and pillowcases ringing our doorbells late at night..jackolantern

I do think Halloween it’s a fun holiday, I’ve always liked it, especially the scary movies! As I’ve gotten older though, I’ve begun to think, as the purchasers of all of this candy, we should do better and make better choices for these little defenseless beings. Wouldn’t you agree?

It’s sad that most “mainstream candy/chocolate” is not made with the best ingredients OR intentions! They are manufactured with 1 goal, to make money, even if that means compromising the quality of the product and the health of the consumer. Ingredients in these confections, like hydrogenated oils (trans fat) and artificial flavoring (chemicals!), can wreak havoc on our bodies.

While handing out broccoli and carrot sticks would be the ideal healthy solution to this sugar-filled holiday, I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t fly with the little ones and you’d probably be labeled “that weird house” on the halloween strip.

6 Ways to Have the Best Night’s Sleep

It’s 11:55 PM. You’re determined to fall fast asleep before the clock strikes 12:00AM. You’ve tried counting endless sheep but nothing seems to be working! If this sounds like you, read on! You are a few tips and tricks away from having the BEST sleep of your life! Trust me!

1. Turn off the TV

How soon before bed do you watch TV? If you are trying to fall asleep soon after turning off your Sunday night show, don’t expect to fall asleep quickly! TV before bed can actually disrupt your sleep cycle and cause you to have a poor quality sleep. The remedy? Try reading a book in place of TV. After a few chapters I guarantee you will be nodding off!

2. Relaxing Tea

Tea is my absolute favorite way to fall asleep. My favorite kind is the Yogi Soothing Caramel Bedtime Tea. After 1 cup of this tea I woke up feeling refreshed and energized after an amazing sleep! Chamomile tea is also a great way to relax. Silly note– make sure the tea is decaf!

3. Warm Bath

What’s more relaxing than a soothing bubble bath, right? If you find yourself struggling to catch your Z’s, try soaking in a warm bath. This is a lovely way to relax your mind and body. Adding Epsom Salts also helps to relax your muscles and soothe any aches and pains that may be keeping you awake at night. If you don’t like baths, try a warm shower!

4. Exercise during the day

You know that restless feeling you get during the night? I found that they best way to defeat it is to exercise during the day. Exercise helps by releasing that pent up energy in your body. Exercise also works by helping to defeat stress, which can cause restlessness at night. I mean, after a great workout who doesn’t want to hit the sheets??

5. Soothing scents

Lavender gets a lot of hype for being the ultimate herb for relaxation. My favorite body lotion by Nubian Hertiage ‘Lavender Wildflowers’ has the perfect hint of lavender which has amazing soothing properties. Try adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to your favorite lotion to help relax your body and mind before bed.
