Why the Weather is Giving You Bad Hair Days

Ever wonder why your hair seems to be gorgeous one day and a complete wreck the next? Or why your hair is fine when the weather is a gorgeous 70 degrees with a humidity level of perfect, but every other day of the year it’s too frizzy, too flat, to dry, too poofy, too shrinkage-prone, or just plain lifeless?

 

Well, the good news is you’re not alone. Of course the grass always seems greener, but the truth is each of us has our very own hair struggles that we face everyday. Perhaps if we better understand why our reacts the way it does in certain weather conditions, we can take steps to ensure our hair is healthy, happy, and balanced everyday. Read on to learn why the weather is giving you bad hair days and what can be done.

Sun & Humidity

During the summer months, not only can the suns UV rays lighten hair, but the extra moisture in the air (aka humidity) loosens bonds created when you style your hair, allowing the hair to return back to its normal state. If you have curly hair and straighten it or loosen your curls (without the use of chemicals) your natural curl pattern will gradually return to its normal curl pattern when exposed to the humidity. The same goes for straight hair. If you curled your naturally straight hair, the curl will gradually fall and your hair will straighten out. This also applies on rainy days (I’m sure we’ve all had our fair share of rainy day hair drama).

There are anti-humectant hair products that exist which can help create a barrier that will temporarily protect hair from the humidity, keeping your style intact for longer. It is important to only use these products only when there is really high humidity. Anti-humectants can be very drying and can end up doing more harm that good.The other solution is to just rock your tresses in their natural state and love the hair you’re born with! (Thats my mini lecture for the day.)

Cold & Dry

In the winter, cold and very dry air raises the hairs’ cuticle. When you then move indoors to a heated environment, the dry air inside sucks the moisture out of your hair. What you’re left with is dry, lifeless, unmanageable hair. Not to mention, the lack of moisture outside isn’t helping matters either. Combat this by wearing your hair in protective styles and shielding it from the cold. Also, condition your hair often, deep condition once per week and use styling products with moisturizing properties.

Banish Ingrown Hairs for Good

Ingrown hair is not as inevitable as one would think.

Yet some of us have just grown to expect it: “Just shaved? Be on the look out for those pesky ingrown hairs!” (Has no one ever been told that?…Okay, me neither!)

When they do show up, you are probably inclined to feel super irritated (physically and emotionally). However, with a few preventative measures, you can keep your skin ‘ingrown hair’ free!

 

1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate: Exfoliating is not only good for revealing radiant, glowing skin but also for preventing those annoying ingrown hairs from showing up! By removing the layer of dead skin through exfoliation, it will be harder for the new growth to become trapped underneath the skin. Exfolating your skin before hand also raises the hair up, making it easier to remove. If you are going to shave, make sure you exfoliate your body before hand. You will prevent ingrown hair AND your skin will be incredibly smooth afterward! Win-win!

2. Lather Up: Shaving your precious skin with no protective barrier is never a good idea. Shaving cream, lotion, or gel lubricate the skin so the razor can easily slide across and remove the hair. Lather your skin with a good lubricant after allowing the warm water to soften the hair. Out of shaving cream? Use your hair conditioner! This little trick works better than most shaving creams!

3. Sharp Razor: Shaving with a dull blade does the body no good! Rather than getting a clean shave, a dull blade merely tugs at the hair which can cause irritation and ingrown hair. It’s best to use your razor only about 5 or 6 times, depending on how often you use it. After a few good shaves, toss that blade and start using a new one!

4. Rest: If your simply prone to ingrown hair, give the shaving a rest! After all, we were born with hair on our body! Try shaving one time per week or only as necessary. By avoiding any excess shaving we can give our delicate skin a nice break from all of the irritation.

5. Choose Wisely: Choosing the right razor will do you loads of good! Take time to actually read the packaging. I prefer razors with 5 blades and the conditioning strip. It may sound silly but taking the time to find a razor that works best with your skin type will be super beneficial for avoiding skin irritation and ingrown hair.

6. Moisturize: Slapping on that body or face cream after you shave is one of the best things you can do. If you have sensitive skin, your skin is most likely feeling dry and irritated. Lathering up with a fabulous moisturizer will help keep your skin lubricated, soft and irritation free!

Simple Tricks for Fuller, Thicker Eyebrows

Fuller, thicker eyebrows sound like a dream come true. Okay, I can’t be the only one that dreams about these things! Anyone?! A lot of us eyebrow-doers (that’s a word, for now) have the tendency to take advantage of the brows we were born with. Most of us have had at least one moment in our lives when we fell victim to the inevitable: over plucking, over waxing, and the dreaded brow shaving.

Well, have no fear ladies and gents! One of the latest beauty trends on the market is designed to fix all of your eyebrow woes: Lace Front Eyebrows. These babies are designed to stick onto your natural brows much like a sticker would. They give you the look of fuller eyebrows without the commitment!

Now, if you love the idea of thicker, fuller eyebrows, but aren’t completely committed to the lace front brow, allow me to share a few ‘brow’ tips!:

Our Simple Tricks for Fuller, Thicker Eyebrows:

1. Castor Oil:

If you’ve read our post on Castor Oil for Hair Growth, you’ll know why I love this magic oil so much! It has done wonders — WONDERS I tell you! — on my eyebrows. Areas where my brow was thinning from over-plucking & waxing, slowly grew back. Within weeks of daily application my eyebrows had what I would call a “fresh canvas”.

Try applying a small amount of castor oil to each brown every night for a few weeks or until you achieve your desired results.

2. Brow Pencil:

I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated by the thought of filling in my own eyebrows. My fear usually went something like this: I would apply the brow pencil ever-so-gently. Once I left the house and entered the gleaming sunlight, I would look like I had smudged black lipstick all over my eyebrows. Now, I love Bert as much as any other Sesame Street fan, but this wasn’t quite the look I was going for.

Now that I have taken the plunge towards filling in my brows, I am happy to say that I love it! It gives my eyebrows a much fuller, deeper look. Since I wear glasses, I like to have the contrast between my dark rimmed glasses and dark, fuller brows.

If you are ready to fill in your brows try giving these natural pencils a shot. Many natural brow pencils tend to contain castor oil, which is an added bonus!

The Dandruff Dilemma: 6 DIY Remedies

If you have ever suffered from a dry, flaky scalp (eek!), then you know just how irritating it can be. It seems like no matter how much you do OR don’t wash your hair, the pesky dandruff keeps on returning! Does this sound like you? If so, keep reading to discover a few interesting ways to cure your dandruff!

Before we get to the fun stuff, I think we should know what causes dandruff:

  • Dry scalp
  • Sensitive scalp
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Poor Diet (lacking Zinc & B Vitamins)
  • Drying hair products (shampoos, gels, etc.)

These are just a handful of the potential causes of dandruff. So, now that we know a little about what causes dandruff, it’s time we learn how to get rid of it!

6 DIY Remedies

1. Coconut Oil- This magnificent oil works wonders getting rid of any pesky flakes! The coconut oil moisturizes your scalp while creating strong, shiny, healthy hair! To use: rub the coconut oil onto your unwashed, dry scalp. Allow the oil to work its magic for about an hour (or even longer!). After the desired amount of time, use the pads of your fingers to wash the oil off of your scalp. Make sure to use a gentle shampoo that won’t strip all of the oil away!

2. Tea Tree Oil– If rubbing oil all over your scalp just isn’t your thing (it’s not for everyone!), add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo. Again, try to only use shampoos that won’t strip all of the oil from your scalp. If you do enjoy the idea of rubbing coconut oil all over your scalp (I love it!), you can also add a few drops of tea tree oil into the mix!

3. Apple Cider Vinegar– ACV is one of my favorite techniques to use on my dry scalp. The ACV works by changing the pH of your scalp, creating a less than optimal home for the yeast-like fungus that can cause dandruff! To use: Simply mix 3 parts filtered water and 1 part apple cider vinegar. Pour the mixture onto your scalp and massage with the pads of your fingers.

4. Garlic & Honey– I know this sounds stinky, but it’s worth a shot! By mixing a few mashed garlic cloves and a tablespoon or two of honey, you can achieve great results. The garlic works wonders getting rid of dandruff, while the honey creates soft, luxurious hair (not to mention the honey makes the application so much easier!). To use: After combining the two ingredients, massage the mixture onto your scalp for 3-5 minutes. Then, shampoo with your favorite gentle shampoo to wash away the mixture and the garlic smell.

5.Lemon Juice– This has been one of my favorite remedies when it comes to getting rid of dandruff. A friend recommended mixing lemon juice with oil (I prefer olive oil or coconut oil) and to massage the mixture onto your scalp. After a few minutes of this exhilarating massage, I allow the mixture to sit for another 10-15 minutes before shampooing with my Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat shampoo.

6. Lifestyle– One of the most important remedies for dandruff is a change of lifestyle. Start by praticing one of these DIY remedies at least 1x per week. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, consuming vital vitamins and nutrients, and remaining stress free. Avoid using any hair products that could be drying out your scalp (shampoos that contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate are a no-no!). Stick to gentle shampoos like Giovanni’s or Everyday Shea products. Most importantly, stay positive! I hope these tips help!

Lifeless Curls: My DIY Fix

Happy Friday Coconuts! We hope everyone is having a fantastic Holiday season! As you may have noticed, we have concluded our Favorite Ingredient Friday series. My DIY Fix for Lifeless Curls

I recently noticed my curls were becoming  limp and lifeless. What gives??, I thought. After doing a little research. Ieggmask3 found that in my case, I needed a little more protein, both internally and externally. As you know, hair is made of protein. So, in order to have the necessary building blocks for your hair to grow healthy and strong, you need to consume enough protein everyday, AT LEAST ½ gram for every pound of your body weight.

I also decided to try an egg-mask. I’ve heard great things about using egg in your hair, but have never tried it.

eggmask2After washing with a clarifying shampoo, I headed to the kitchen to mix 1 egg (for protein) with ¼ to ½ cup of honey (for moisture). I let the mask sit for 20-30 minutes, then rinsed my hair thoroughly and conditioned normally. I won’t lie, my hair had an odd oder afterward, not bad, just weird, so I would recommend using this treatment on a day you are not going anywhere, or use styling products with a strong fragrance.

The results? My curls were alive again!

If your curls are lookin’ a little limp, then perhaps try a protein treatment. Eggmask1Use a clarifying shampoo or rinse with ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) beforehand to get rid of any build-up on your hair. Then try this egg-protein mask, or your favorite protein conditioner and watch your curls come to life!

Beauty Find: Rosehip Oil

Once again, Brown & Coconut was on the look out for another fabulous natural product that will do wonders for the body without breaking the bank or be chalk full of chemicals (yuck!). So word on the natural streets (yes, I know that’s not a real phrase but we can make it one?…) is one product that I keep hearing about: Rosehip Oil. Now, I know Rosehip oil is not new to the scene and is definitely  in many of the natural products we use,  but never purely by itself.

Shampoo Bars!

So, I have heard the words shampoo bar being thrown around on many natural hair care forums, but never gave it much thought until Zeena and I were browsing a local naturally based food & body care shop.

Of course when we entered the shop, we B-lined it for the hair-care section like the true addicts we are, and there they were shampoo bars.jpg*cue the music*…the shampoo bars!

Zeena and I immediately got all googly-eyed and snatched a bar off the shelf to take a look. After some long and careful consideration (more like 2.5 seconds) I was SOLD and threw it in my basket to buy!

I purchased my bar for about $6 and busted that baby out as soon as I got home. First things first, that little sucker is SLIPPERY. As soon as it got wet, I couldn’t pin it down, it was sliding all over the shower! With that being said, I have never experienced a shampoo product with that much slip! Fabulous for my curls! The shampoo bar lathered wonderfully and worked through my hair with ease. After a nice massage with my finger tips, I rinsed. The shampoo rinsed out easily and left my hair feeling clean, but not stripped and straw-like! AMAZING!

When my hair dried, it was shiny, curl-licious, bouncy, and soft!

Will I purchase a shampoo bar again? You bet your bottom dollar! In fact, I don’t think I will be going back to regular shampoo…

Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful!…

…but the humidifier’s so delightful!

Winter weather

 

If you’ve ever lived in a cold/dry climate you certainly know how harsh winter-like weather or dry climates can be on our bodies inside and out.

Whether it be a region that is always cold and dry, or a region that experiences winter seasonally, when that chill hits, you know what to expect.

 

Many people can experience the following:

  1. Dry skin
  2. Chapped Lips
  3. Increase in fine line & wrinkleswinter
  4. Breakouts
  5. Dry/scratchy throat
  6. Dry Hair
  7. Nosebleeds
  8. Greater risk of respiratory infections
  9. Greater risk of illness from viruses

Fortunately, there is a very simple solution to many of the above. No, not magic, but a humidifier. Plain and simple.

Using a humidifier in your home, bedroom, or office is a great way to keep your body in tip top shape when the air gets dry.

  • Prevent weather induced breakouts because your skin doesn’t dry out and then overproduce oil to compensate (over production of oil contributes to breakouts.)
  • Keep your throat hydrated nixing that dry scratchy feeling caused by dry air
  • Hydrate your lovely locks.
  • Keep your nasal passage moist so nosebleeds will be dramatically reduced, if not sopped altogether
  • Help protect you from respiratory infections. Your lungs and nasal passage work best when they are lubricated. In a more humid environment, the tiny hairs in your lungs and nose can do a better job of fending off respiratory illnesses.
  • Offer some protection against certain viruses. For viruses that thrive in  cold dry air,  warmer/humid environments are not a place these nasty germs can survive thus, reducing your chance of infection.

5 Reasons You NEED Rosemary

Herbs just don’t get all the wonderful credit they deserve, huh?. Take Rosemary, for example. Rosemary is a fragrant and flavorful  herb that is native to the Mediterranean region. Although it is typically used in cooking, it has so many other benefits! So many that you just may find yourself using Rosemary more often then you think…

Rosemary contains anti-inflammatory properties that help promote blood circulation. It also helps reduce the severity of current acne and prevents new blemishes from forming. Try creating your own rosemary toner by bowling a few sprigs of rosemary in water. Allow the mixture to cool before removing the rosemary. Apply the cooled mixture to a freshly washed face.

 2.Relaxation

This herb doesn’t just belong in your cooking, but also in your home. Try hanging rosemary leaves around the home or hanging a bag of rosemary in your shower. The hot steam from the shower will help release the calming aroma.

3.Hair Growth

Just like the to the wondrous skin benefits, rosemary also promotes blood circulation and stimulation on the scalp. Adding the essential oil of rosemary to your shampoo and/or conditioner can help improve hair growth. Also try rinsing your hair with rosemary tea for a refreshing rinse!

4.Digestion

Upset stomach? The best way to ease digestion is with rosemary tea.  The warm tea can reduce any cramping or discomfort you may be having.

5.Detoxification

Rosemary contains antioxidants! This herb attacks those free radicals that promote disease and aging. Consuming rosemary may be the key to getting a cleaner and healthier body on the inside.

5 Beauty Must-Haves for the Fall

Fall is finally here! This is one of my favorite seasons: the food, the holidays, the clothes! I mean, how can you not love the fall?! Well, not only has the season changed, but so has my beauty regimen! Keeping my regimen fresh means hair, skin and nails that are moisturized and happy. 1.Nubian Heritage Lavender & Wildflowers Lotion

This lotion is a must have for the colder temps. The consistency is amazing: thick and creamy, yet not greasy. In fact, I would call it more of a butter than a lotion. It goes on smoothly and smells BEAUTIFUL. The touch of lavender provides that relaxing sensation while the hint of wildflowers transports you to a field of, well, wildflowers! If the colder weather means dry, cracked skin for you, look no further than this magical BODY BUTTER, I mean “lotion”.

Ever suffer from weak, brittle nails in the colder months? Yeah, me too! This Sally Hansen nail strengthener does WONDERS for those brittle nails! Within weeks you will notice stronger, healthier nails. Plus, it works amazing as a base coat!

5. Mineral Fusion Curl Care Beauty Balm

The weather isn’t quite cold enough to start using my heavier hair creams but I still like to give my hair a bit more moisture than I did in the Summer. So, what do I use?
