Honey has wonderful antibacterial properties that are great for destroying and preventing bacteria from forming on your skin. Since honey is a humectant it naturally moisturizes the skin. To use: apply honey to acne as a spot treatment or as a full-face mask. Leave on for however long you desire!

Cinnamon, Nutmeg & Honey:

Cinnamon, much like honey, is effective in destroying bacteria. Cinnamon is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that are great for calming down acne. The nutmeg helps to fade those stubborn acne scars and reduce redness. To use: apply the mixture to acne spots and leave overnight.

Turmeric & Orange Juice:

Turmeric is one of my favorite acne treatments. It has superb anti-inflammatory properties that leave your skin vibrant, clear and brilliantly soft. The antiseptic properties in turmeric allow it to effectively and thoroughly clean out your clogged pores. To use: mix the turmeric powder and orange juice to form a thin paste. Apply to spots or blackheads and leave overnight.

Lemon Juice:

The exfoliating properties in lemon juice are great for ridding your skin of dead skin cells while destroying bacteria and healing acne. Lemon juice can also help to dry out acne spots while reducing redness. To use: apply a thin layer to spots and leave overnight.

Banana Peel:

The peel of a banana is great for reducing irritation and redness. The nutrients in the banana peel help to treat your acne and prevent new breakouts. To use: rub the inside peel of one banana on your spots. Repeat multiple times a day.  Allow to dry before washing your skin at night.

Tea Tree Oil:

Tea Tree Oil is one the most powerful antibacterial treatments I have used on my skin. It destroys the bacteria on your spots while preventing new pimples from forming. Tea tree oil significantly reduces the size of the pimples overnight while keeping redness and dryness at bay. To use: Apply a small amount of tea tree oil to your spots. It is best to use a carrier oil such as jojoba oil to dilute the tea tree oil which may be too harsh for sensitive skin. Leave on overnight.

Bentonite Clay & Apple Cider Vinegar:

Bentonite clay is an amazing way to pull out the dirt and oil from clogged pores leaving your skin bright and refreshed. It heals active acne spots while soothing irritated skin. Your face may be a bit red after treatment, but that will eventually fade. If you have sensitive skin, I suggest using water with the bentonite clay rather than ACV which can be too harsh. To use: mix the bentonite clay with ACV or water. Apply to spots and leave overnight.

Epsom Salt:

Epsom salt has become my nightly acne spot treatment. It detoxifies your skin and soothes breakouts. Epsom salt is also antibacterial. It calms down acne overnight while reducing redness, preventing dryness, and literally shrinking pimples overnight.  To use: mix up  one tablespoon of epsom salt with a teaspoon or two of water. Apply the watery mixture to acne spots. Allow the mixture to dry and leave overnight. Be careful to not get the mixture into your eyes.

You are right about these being much more cost effective than over the counter acne treatments. The other great thing is that many of these are natural so you are not using chemicals that could damage you skin. It is amazing what nature can do to help your treat your acne.

One of my favorites is honey. I find that as you say it moisturizes my skin while I am treating my acne.

      Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comment! Honey is one of my many favorites as well. Once I stopped using benzoyl peroxide on my skin (which stopped working years ago) I was surprised that these methods ACTUALLY worked! In fact, they worked much better than any store bought spot treatment I’ve ever tried. I completely agree–it’s amazing what nature can help us with! 🙂

      Hi Anna,

Thank you for the lovely comment! It is definitely very hard to deal with acne, especially when it seems like nothing is working. I also love lemon as a spot treatment! It works great as an exfoliator too. Have you tried the epsom salt masks a few times a day? That has worked the BEST. 🙂

  • The Nameless One says:

Hello! Where can i find epsom salts? I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

    • Brown & Coconut says:

Hi there! Epsom salts are available at most grocery or pharmacies. If there are any CVS, Walgreens or Riteaids nearby, try asking the associates if they have any epsom salts in stock. If not, it can also be purchased online here. I hope this helps! 🙂
