DIY Removal of Hair Buildup

Removing buildup from our hair is important in order to maintain a healthy scalp. The products we use everyday to style our hair like leave-ins, gels and mousses slowly buildup on our scalp. If you suffer from buildup, you may notice dry/oily, greasy, weighed-down, dull, frizzy hair, and an itchy scalp.


Removing buildup sounds difficult but this process should only take you about 10-15 minutes!

What You’ll Need:

  • Applicator Bottle
  • 3 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 5 TBSP Spring Water

Mix Apple Cider Vinegar and Spring Water in applicator bottle. I picked up my applicator bottle at Sally’s Beauty Supply, but feel free to use an empty water bottle!

I prefer to use Spring Water to avoid adding further buildup that may come from the tap water.

Divide your hair into 4 sections.  Taking one section at a time, thoroughly apply the mixture to your scalp. Using the pads of your fingers, rub your scalp in circular motions. After you finish each section, rinse your hair to remove the buildup. Then, condition your hair.

Since I don’t shampoo everyday, I like to clarify my scalp about 2 times a month.

I found that the Apple Cider Vinegar treatment works best on hair that is freshly washed. Before you clarify, wash your scalp with a shampoo that won’t leave any buildup! (my fav is Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo).
