Growing up, I always had clear skin and never experienced acne as most do in their teen years. It wasn’t until my final year of college that I suffered from acne. It seemed to just appear out of nowhere and NOTHING I did could get rid of it. I was embarrassed and ashamed. I felt like it was all anybody saw when they looked at me. To make matters worse, it seemed everyone felt the need to comment or give advice on how to clear up my skin. I was mortified enough as it was, I didn’t need every other soul on the planet to remind me what my face looked like.
I can recall a time I was riding the train, a pretty crowded train, and an older man decided to yell at me across the train “Try rubbing garlic on your face, that would help to clear that up!”
Another time I was at the checkout counter at a convenience store and the clerk asked “What happened to your face? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
I’m sure they both meant well, just as I’m sure the woman in the public restroom meant well when she stopped to tell me to rub lime juice on my face, but it still didn’t help me to feel any better about myself, or to clear up my skin.
One day I was browsing Whole Foods for hair care products and an employee who was assisting me asked what I was using on my face. After responding, she went on to tell me that acne can be caused by a bacterial imbalance in our digestive tract. She gave me a sample of a probiotic supplement. She told me to take one a day and my skin should begin to respond within a few weeks. Much to my surprise it worked! I couldn’t believe that my skin was finally clearing. Not only that, but I had always suffered from random sharp pains in my stomach, like clockwork after I ate. Since taking the probiotics, I no longer suffer from those pains.
Of course, I still get the occasional breakout like anyone else, but my skin is no longer full of acne 🙂

My Secret to Clear Skin:
- Bio-Kult Probiotics twice a day
- Nordic Naturals Omega 3 Fish Oil twice a day
- Drinking 3 liters to 1 gallon of water per day
- Clean Eating:
- Lots of fruits & veggies
- Little to no sugar & refined carb intake
- No Processed foods
- No consumption of dairy intake
- Lean meats only (no red meat)
- No consumption of vegetable oils
- Limited coffee consumption
- Washing face twice daily with Everyday Face Wash
- Exfoliate a couple of times a week with Hibiscus Cleansing Grains
- When I need a spot treatment for the occasional breakout, I use this Kale Mask.
